Key Stage 2 Poem and songs

The hall has been a very packed place for the last couple of days as both Key Stage 1 and 2 perform the Christmas performances for parents, family and friends. After our younger pupils performed a modern twist of the nativity with their 'Midwife Crisis', our entire Key Stage 2 performed Christmas poems and songs. Well done to all the children who learned their words, songs and music so well. We're all well and truly feeling very festive now!

Year 2 It's behind you!

On Friday 11^th December, Year 2 went to watch a very exciting performance of ‘Aladdin’ at Derby Arena. It was a fantastic show and we all enjoyed getting involved with shouting and singing along. What a festive time we all had!

Key Stage 1's Midwife Crisis

Well done to all our Year 1 and 2 pupils and staff for performing another wonderful Christmas nativity production! With a modern day twist to the traditional tale 'A Midwife Crisis' involved a cast of 120 pupils with all the usual characters plus a few extras and kept Key Stage 2 and 2 hall full sets of parents, family and friends very entertained. We're really starting to feel very Christmassy now!

A busy week in Year 4!

On Monday 7th December, Nightingales and Kingfishers rounded off their Ancient Greek topic with a Greek Day.  Everybody looked amazing dressed in traditional Greek clothes.  We made Greek theatre masks and had the chance to eat some delicious (and , for some, not so delicious!) Greek food.  A great end to a fantastic topic.

Then on Wednesday, 9th December, all of Year 4 went to a New Age Kurling festival.  For most of us, this was a new sport but we soon picked it up and had a great morning competing against each other and against other schools. 

Year 1 visit the Elves!

Both Year 1 classes went on a trip to Derby Theatre before Christmas to see a production of ‘The Elves and the shoemaker’. It was lovely for them to see a familiar traditional tale brought to life, and lots of audience participation ensured a good time was had by all!

Nativity story by Foundation Stage

What a Christmas treat for the school today when we filled the hall to watch the first performance of the Foundation Stage nativity. With angel voices, the children all managed to sing, dance and remembered their parts beautifully. Well done children and staff for such a lovely start to our Christmas festivities.

Christmas is here!

Christmas festivities well and truly began at Silverhill today as the children all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner on Christmas jumper day! Raising money for ITV's Text Santa charity, the children wore a splendid array of flashing, sparkling and christmassy jumpers while Sally and the dinner staff cooked and served over 400 Christmas dinners! Well done everyone - a fantastic effort!

Our school choir

On 4th December our wonderful school choir went to sing at Dove House residential home in Sudbury and The Birches in Mickleover. The residents thoroughly enjoyed listening to the children singing as well as joining in with some of the carols. The children gave such pleasure with their singing and brightened the lives of some of the older generation wishing them a very merry Christmas.

Year 5 and 6 gym competition

Congratulations to our fantastic team of year 5 and 6 gymnasts who performed magnificently in the Derby City School Sport Partnership gymnastic competition. The children all performed brilliantly resulting in the team bronze award. Congratulations to India for her individual bronze award. We're very proud of you all!

The Tale of Shakespeare's Macbeth

On Tuesday December 1st, our Year 4 and Year 6 pupils were visited by The Young Shakespeare Company and enthralled by a stunning performance of Macbeth. The children were inspired by just the right mix of participation, explanation and the traditional play itself. It was a real treat to be so close to such excellent actors and the children were utterly mesmerized and buzzing. We look forward to seeing the work the children create from this visit next term!

Postman Bains visits Robins and Wrens

On Tuesday December 1st, Wrens and Robins had a special visitor - it was Mr Bains the postman! We have been reading the Jolly Postman and thinking about people who help us, so we really enjoyed meeting a real live postman. We asked lots of questions, including "How do you sort the letters out?" and "How do you get the parcels through the doors?" Mr Bains showed us his uniform, including his special postman gloves and his woolly hat. He also showed us the cards that postmen use if people aren't at home and his big bag for all the letters. Cycle Derby in school

Our Year 1, Year 5 and Year 6 pupils have all been keeping the staff from Cycle Derby very busy this half term with Balanceability for our younger chidren, Level 1 training for our Year 5 and Level 2 training for our Year 6! Well done everyone for braving the elements and showing your skills!

Spice tasting in Year 5

In Year 5, as part of our Food focus this year, we were lucky enough to have a visit from the local Indian  Restaurant, The Basmatti in Heatherton. The visit focussed on the use of spices in the culinary world of India, their history, uses and many different varieties.

 

The session started off with the children smelling and looking at a range of different spices, from the King of all Spices (Cumin), to the Queen (Cardamom). We were all intrigued by the many different textures and colours, and had great fun guessing what sort of foods they could be used in! Following a little bit of a historical tour of India, and a lesson on the scoville pepper scale, our brave taste testers began the taste-bud exploding task of trying a little of each spice. Many memories were made that day, from the sweet and minty delights, to the explosions of fiery flavours from the stronger spices; There were many funny faces to be seen!

 

We had an absolutely fabulous session, and learnt a lot! We would like to thank the Basmatti for their lesson, our free meal vouchers and the excellent insight into Indian Cuisine.

Year 2 at the Fundamentals festival

On November 24th Peregrines went to the 'Fundamentals Festival!' This was an exciting morning taking part in many different sporting activities. We were learning football skills, taking part in agility activities, riding bikes and even learning how to do some yoga! We all had a fantastic time.

Year 1 have an igloo!

As a part of their Homes around the World topic the year 1 pupils and staff have been busy building their very own unique winter home! It's been a long time building with a whole lot of milk bottles and a very large amount of glue but our year 1 pupil finally have their very own igloo and it make a perfect reading den!

FS2 visit to the the church

On Thursday 26th November Robins and Wrens visited All Saints Church in Mickleover. Whilst we were there we learned more about the Christian story of Christmas and carried out lots of fun activities.

Gymnastics champion

Our local gymnastics club, Mickleover Gymnastics,  held their over eights in-house competition on Sunday 22nd November 2015 where many of our pupils performed with great success.  Georgia won a gold medal overall and a silver and bronze medal for the floor and vault.  Well done Georgia! A star in the making!

Friendship week in FS2

Robins and Wrens have enjoyed lots of friendship and feelings activities this week, including making a friendship fruit salad. We voted for our favourite fruits and helped to chop them. Then, we wrote invitations to people we don't normally play with asking them to share the fruit salad with us. We have tried new foods and made new friends :)

Friendship Week in Year 6

During 'Food for Friendship' enrichment day, the Year 6 have been demonstrating some excellent cooking skills! Fitting in with their Topic work on the war, they have been focusing on rationing. They have learnt about rationing, and about Lord Woolton. As a result, they prepared, cooked and tasted their very own Woolton Pies and they were delicious!

Cyclo Competition

A group of year 5 and 6 children took part in our First Cyclo cross meet of the year on Thursday 19th Novemeber. They had a lot to live up to as we reached the County finals last year but the team were superb. They came 2nd overall, narrowly being beaten to the top spot by 1 point! We can now look forward to adding some more points to our overall total in March.

Year 1 visit Pickfords House

On Novemebr 13th our Year 1 pupils visited Pickfords House in Derby to find out about houses in the past. The children had a great time discovering the differences between Victorian Houses and our own today. We decided that we would rather live in houses with modern equipment in them – especially when it came to washing the clothes and going to the toilet!

Children in Need

Friday 13th might be an unlucky date for some but this year it meant a Children in Need pyjama day! Raising money for this fantastic charity, the children looked wonderful and even managed to stay awake all day whilst also raising £252. Well done everyone! 

Remembrance service

The 11th day of the 11th month saw our Year 6 pupils demonstrate fabulous behaviour and respect during their Remembrance Service. Sharing their learning of World War 1 in an interesting and informative manner, which truly engaged the rest of the school, the children received very high praise from staff, parents and visitors.

Anyone for table tennis?

On Tuesday 10th November two teams from Silverhill headed off to the yearly table tennis tournament at Derby Moor, alongside 6 other schools. In two team of four, with two boys and two girls in each, the children competed in doubles tournaments.

With many matches won or drawn, it really was a time to shine. The children played exceptionally, demonstrating amazing sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament.

A huge well done to both of the teams, and a big thank you to Derby SSP, the parents and all the other participating schools for their support!

Trip to Denstone College

On Wednesday 4th November our latest Year 6 recruits returned to Denstone College to experience their cadet accademy for a World War experience. After a delicious dinner in the beautiful college dining hall, the children tried their skills at marching in formation, putting up tents, wearing the cadet uniform and trench coat, holding a genuine (but unloaded!) rifle and even sampling some ration pack food!

Cyclocross with Cycle Derby

80 very excited year 5 and 6 pupils had a great opportunity today when they were visited by Cycle Derby and their van full of bikes! Taking part in groups of 15 the children raced round the track on the lower school field and certainly found their competitive sides! We look forward to more Cyclocross activities later on in the school year!

American Football

On Thursday 8th October, a lucky 20 Key Stage 2 children had the opportunity to work with the awesome Derby Braves at Derby University. The children were taught a variety of American Football skills and also had the opportunity to put their skills to the test in a game situation. Mrs Brundish is in the process of choosing 2 American Football Mini-leaders to help more children get involved with the sport during lunchtimes. We can wait to see some more stars or the future develop!

Year 5 visit Harry Potter (again!)

On Thursday the 8th of October, Year 5 headed off on our yearly adventure to London to visit Warner Brothers Studios, the home to Harry Potter!

After a very long journey and lots of traffic cone spotting, we finally arrived at the huge stages at Levesden Studios. We were treated to a quick stop of in the lot cinema, before working our way through two enormous sound stages and outdoor sets!

From broomstick flying, to wand mastery, a quick trip on the Hogwarts Express to the amazing Castle, it really was a day for many wow faces! We even got to have a sneaky peek at the sets where they are currently filming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest in the Harry Potter films!

That Poetry Bloke at Mickleover Library

On Wednesday 7th October, 30 children from a range of classes Y2-Y6 went to Mickleover Library to see a guest performance from the poet Craig Bradley (aka That Poetry Bloke). The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and as you can see from the photos, there was a lot of audience participation. Craig had us all laughing continuously for over an hour with his funny jokes, rhymes, poems and songs that he created with help from the children. What a great way to spend a wet Wednesday afternoon! Our Gymnastic stars

Many congratulations to sisters India and Aasia who took part in the East Staffordshire Gymnastic club competition at the weekend. India was awarded level 3 champion and Aasia level 5 bronze medalist. Well done girls - we look forward to hearing about your next achievements!

Harvest

On Friday 2nd October we held a very enjoyable Harvest Festival Assembly featuring some fabulous singing from our foundation stage pupils! The staff from the Padley Centre were very grateful for the food and toiletries they collected from us, it's a good job they had a big van! Many thanks for all your generous donations. 

Macmillian Coffee Morning

On Friday 25th teacher shared their baking (or cake shopping) skills with pupils in school to raise money for Macmillan. A total of £270 were raised from the children's donations all for enjoying cake and biscuits! Thank you everyone who contributed.

Summer reading challenge

This week the children who took part in the Summer Holiday Reading Challenge were rewarded for their efforts. Children were asked to read a book every week of the holidays to encourage a healthy love of reading and these children clearly LOVE reading! Well done everyone and keep it up!

We were delighted to again be achieve the SSG Bronze award for outstanding physical education and school sports provision. Well done to all the children for their fantastic sporting achievements whilst always demonstrating superb sportsmanship, to the staff and parents for their commitment and also to Mrs Brundish for her organisation, support and encouragement.

Mr and Mrs McDonald

Many, many congratulations to Mrs Vorley who, on a beautiful sunny day over the summer holidays, became Mrs McDonald! Watched by a lots of the school staff (who scrubbed up quite well!) the new Mr and Mrs McDonald enjoyed a stunning outdoor ceremony followed by music, food and dancing. A wonderful day and everyone at Silverhill wishes then all the best for their future.

Summer Reading Challenge

Over the summer holidays we are asking that all children take part in the ‘Silverhill Summer Reading Challenge’. The aim of the challenge is to get children to read at least six books during the summer holidays. The purpose of this challenge is to promote a healthy ‘love of reading’ and to encourage everyone to continue to practise their reading skills during the holidays.

Please look out for details of our Summer Reading Challenge in the information pack that was sent out in the last week of term, explaining what is involved! There are books to be read and prizes to be won!

Leavers 2015

At the end of another very busy year at Silverhill we say so long and farewell to our fantastic Year 6 pupils who now move on to pastures new. After working exceptionally hard, achieving great SATs results and putting on the best leavers production yet, the whole school lined the playground to clap the children out towards their parents. Well done Year 6 - you made us very proud, good bye and good luck to you all! Have a wonderful summer everyone! We also say goodbye and good luck to Mrs Towle in her early retirement and lots of love and luck to Mrs Vorley on her wedding day; we hope the sun shines for you and you enjoy every happiness in your married life as Mrs McDonald!

Prize Giving

Congratulations to all our fantastic award winners this year. A lovely assembly attended by all pupils, staff and parents, saw Sophia, William, Edie, Kameron, Iqra, Tommy, Millie, Tessneem, Lucy, Imed, Luke and Dylan collect awards for their effort, progress or attitude to their school work. For our Year 6 pupils, George was awarded the trophy for creative writing, the award for creativity was awarded to Ciara, whilst Connor received the Shield for effort and Sienna was awarded the trophy for most improvement. Year 6 awards were also presented to Grace for art, Tyrell for citizenship, Ella for music, Sophia for sports girl and James for sports boy. The award for English was given to William and the award for Maths was given to Jake. Finally, Mrs Nash presented this year's Headteacher Award to Megan. Many, many congratulations to all our winners. We are very proud of you all!

First Aid training

In the final week of primary school we always ensure our Year 6 pupils are ready for anything with some first aid training. Covering basic first aid to CPR, bleeds and bandages we hope our pupils leave primary school ready for anything!

Megazone!

At the end of a very busy year, term and week our Year 6 spent the day a Megazone for an end of school treat! The day was full of three games of lazer quest, football, netball, pizza, nuggets, chips and some very hot children but a great day was had by all! Well done Year 6 - you earned it!

Cinderella Rockerfella

Cinderalla Rockerfella

On Thursday 16th July our Year 6 pupils took to the stage twice to perform their spectacular production of 'Cinderella Rockerfella'. Once provided with the script and the music the children took charge, arranging props, costumes and improvised lines ultimately creating their own version of the show which had the audiences enthralled. They sang, danced and acted magnificently and left parents and staff thoroughly entertained and very proud!

Key Stage 1 sports day

On Thursday 16th July the sun managed to shine all morning for our re-scheduled Key Stage 1 sports day. Representing our four chosen countries the children wore their team colours with pride and took part in a range of races and athletic events supported by a field full of parents. The children showed great spirit, determination and sportsmanship with China the victorious team of the day.

Bastille day enrichment

After a lovely long weekend, pupils returned to school on Tuesday 14th July to 'French Day' when everyone wore red, white and blue as part of our Bastille Day enrichment. All across the school pupils took part in French themed activities from building the Eiffel Tower to a mini Tour de France! Visit our Twitter page to see lots of pictures from the day

Choir performance

On Wednesday 8th July Mrs Nash and the school choir went to Murray park and joined 4 other schools to sing in a concert and take a look at their potential future secondary school.

The event was the first of its kind in Derby and the children received special coaching to learn five songs in preparation for it.

The choir sounded amazing! Well done everyone!
