Year 1 Theatre trip

On Thursday 15th December, the Year 1 went to watch the production 'Jack' at Derby Theatre. The children had a great time and laughing their heads off. They were singing and clapping along with the the songs. They especially liked the chicken because it was trying to eat them! It was very funny! 3 Year 6 were lucky enough to go with them as a reward for all their hard work this term - well done Alana, Ethan and Josh!

Channel 5 News

What an exciting day when Channel 5 news came to film an article for their 5pm news! Filming a report about the news that England's state schools have been warned they'll have to make savings of three billion pounds by 2020. The spending watchdog says purse strings have to be tightened even though the majority of secondary schools already have a budget deficit. Well the Government says it's changing the way the money that IS there is shared, to make the system fairer. Click here to watch us on TV!

Hour of Code

Over the last week, from foundation stage right through to Year 6, have participated in Hour of Code – an initiative to encourage all children to get ‘Switched On’ with the principles and ideas of programming. From Light Bot and Minecraft, to Scratch Interactive Christmas Cards and Python coding, the children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves (especially as it seems just like playing a game!) We would encourage all children, big or small, girl or boy to continue to ‘Play’ at home – after all it really is the best type of learning!

Year 6 Hollocaust Centre trip

On Friday 9th November our Year 6 visited The Holocaust Center to see 'The Journey', in support of their current topic - World War 2. The interactive museum took the children into the life of a Jewish child living in Berlin at the start of the war and proved to be a very thought provoking and enjoyable day. The children learnt a great deal of historical facts balanced with exploring sensitive feelings. The children behaved impeccably, used some fantastic vocabulary in posing some brilliant questions and showed incredible empathy and understanding. What a fantastic day!

Postman visit in Foundation Stage

Wrens and Robins have been reading and learning all about The Jolly Postman by Allan Ahlberg. This week we were lucky enough to have a real life postman visit our classroom! Mr Bains told us all about his job: how the letters get sorted, why we have to put a stamp on, what happens to parcels if people are not in and what happens to letters for different countries. He also showed and told us about special postman equipment, including different coats for different weather, special grips for his shoes if it snows and a 'letter peg' which makes sure dogs don't bite his fingers through the letterboxes! The children were very keen to find out about life as a postman, although we decided that we wouldn't like to get up at 4.30am! Thank you Mr Bains for coming to visit FS2.

Girls football

On a bitterly cold Thursday 24th November some of the Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils took part in a Girls' Football Competition at Woodlands School and played against a variety of other schools. Isla and Imogen did a great job in defense making sure the other teams didn't score through some super challenges. Ellen was brilliant in goal, clearing the ball from her area to her team mates. Molly had a great attitude and Tessa was a great team player, always stopping the ball from going the wrong way. Charlie received woman of the match and despite the ball hitting her twice in the same place, played very well. Isabelle was great at communicating to her team in defense and Kayla was happy to play in any position required. Fern was very competitive and worked superbly as a member of the team. We had a great time at the competition and can't wait to play again!

Year 5 visit Tutbury

On Thursday 24th November Year 5 headed to Tutbury Castle for the day to meet the Queen! The children were welcomed by Queen Elizabeth herself, who then told the children some fascinating facts such as: she used to wear thick white makeup to cover up small pox, she came to the throne in 1558 and ruled England for almost 45 years, when she got angry she would throw her shoes at people and many more. A lovely gentleman named Mike showed us around and told us many interesting facts about the Tudor period which has been our topic this term. We loved our trip to Tutbury and would love to go there again.

FS nativity trip

On Thursday 24th November, Christmas really started in FS2 as Robins and Wrens went on a Nativity trip! We walked a long way to St John's Church, where we listened very carefully to the story of the Nativity. We found out that sometimes the best presents don't have to look fabulous, and we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus, as well as learning a new song all about parties. Then we did some craft activities before walking all the way back to school again. What a lovely day and well done to all the Robins and Wrens :)

Many, many thanks to children and families who kindly put together a shoebox full of gifts for children in a third world country. You kindness will bring an enormous amount of happiness to a young child. The children's behaviour was exceptional throughout the trip! Well done Sparrows and Swallows!

Congratulations to our wonderful Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 teams on the very high standard of achievement in the 2016 phonics screening check, putting Silverhill Primary in the top 8% of all primary schools in the country. Praise goes to the staff, parents and pupils for all their hard work in such a vital element for developing early reading.
